Network statistics on early English Syntax: Structural criteria
نویسنده
چکیده
Syntactic networks are window to the overall organization and structure of language. Its growing through language acquisition process could reveal interesting features. Here, the network view to language is briefly discussed as well as practical set of criteria to describe syntactic networks of child language. Notions such structure or full interpretation are subtle or non-existing in child language, but it doesn’t implies that it is unstructured at all. Based in this criteria we define also a measure close to MLU: 〈S〉, which is the mean size of structured strings. This document is mainly for practical purposes; first, it is an attempt to locate syntactic networks within the global study of language. But, overall, it is not a treatise where theoretical notions are discussed: It is presented a compendium of criteria which tries to be coherent and leads us to be able to extract interesting network information from data.

Textuality of Idiomatic Expressions in Cameroon English
The meaning of an idiomatic expression cannot be transparently worked out from the meanings of its constituent words due to its figurative and unpredictable nature. Consequently, the syntactic composition and the structural paradigm of an idiomatic expression are supposed to be the same in every context. However, this is not the case in the institutionalized second language varieties of English...
متن کاملSyntax and Discourse Constraints Interact at the Level of Structural Representation: Evidence from On-line Sentence Comprehension
The claim that contextually given information is preferred early in a sentence relative to new information has been discussed extensively in previous work. Syntactic alternations like the English dative alternation provide a mechanism for the realization of these information-structural word order preferences. We conducted two self-paced reading experiments to determine whether syntactic and inf...

Background: The P600 brain wave reflects syntactic processes in response to different first language (L1) syntactic violations, syntactic repair, structural reanalysis, and specific semantic components. Unlike semantic processing, aspects of the second language (L2) syntactic processing differ from the L1, particularly at lower levels of proficiency. At higher L2 proficiency, syntactic violatio...
متن کاملReverse Engineering of Network Software Binary Codes for Identification of Syntax and Semantics of Protocol Messages
Reverse engineering of network applications especially from the security point of view is of high importance and interest. Many network applications use proprietary protocols which specifications are not publicly available. Reverse engineering of such applications could provide us with vital information to understand their embedded unknown protocols. This could facilitate many tasks including d...
متن کاملExtracting Syntax Statistics from Large Corpora of Written English
The field of linguistics has seen a growing interest in the statistics of everyday language. In studying how we acquire language and why some of its aspects are more difficult for us than others, it is critical to understand the linguistic environment to which we are exposed. However, gathering statistics over syntactic structures, even with a syntactically tagged corpus, can be difficult and t...
